1. After I had said my goodbyes on Saturday I got into my car and was about to leave, but the car wouldn't start. After putting a little gas in the tank, trying again, calling every VW mechanic in town (all closed on Saturdays), despairing, and deciding that the fates did not want me to leave Eugene, my mom suggested that I just try again. After sputtering a little, the car started. It had probably been out of gas, but the fuel light didn't come on (which it has in the past when the fuel is low), so it's a little hard to explain what happened. I think maybe the car had just as much ambivalence about moving as I did. Here is a picture of the car, all packed, on day two of my trip:
2. I visited my friends E & W in Cupertino (bay area, south of SF), and we went wine tasting at two wineries near their house. It was a wonderful relaxing day with great friends, and helped take my mind off of being sad about moving. Here are a couple of pictures:
3. Jeff and I are both contending with pee-stained carpets in our new apartments (a small dog apparently peed all over my bedroom, and a cat left it's mark in Jeff's living room). The carpet cleaners are here in my apartment at this very moment, and Jeff has his being cleaned early next week. I am hopeful that this will do the trick (these cleaners are supposedly "pet urine experts" and I believe them-- they even have a little pee-detecting device that they stuck into all the spots in the carpet to see how bad it was). I really don't want to get into a carpet battle with my property manager, but there is no way I'm going to sleep on top of pee smell.
My roommate is arriving today, hopefully tomorrow we'll get some furniture, and soon I'll be starting work. I'm planning to update this blog regularly (I know I've never done that in the past, but I think this time will be different), so check back soon!
