All better

Maren did end up getting Covid, just like the rest of us. She had a fever for one day and bounced right back after that. We all seem to be symptom-free now, though we are watching for tiredness in case that sticks around a little longer.

Today Jeff ventured out of the house with the kids. He took them to the cat café so that I could have a little break. They all had a good time.

Next week things go back to normal, with everyone at school, daycare, and work. We are looking forward to it ❤️

Covid

After two years of being as careful as we could, covid has hit us. Jeff tested positive first, then Linden, then me. Maren is still testing negative. Jeff had tiredness and cold symptoms which are gone, Linden had a fever on and off for less than 24 hours and tiredness for another day and she is now back to normal, and I have a sore scratchy throat and tiredness. Maren isn’t out of the woods yet, but so far so good.

The biggest challenge for us is not the illness itself but figuring out how to manage work plus childcare. Our jobs don’t really allow for sick time – the work just piles up and has to be done at some point. We managed this before because we were in emergency mode, but it was not sustainable. Also now, two years in, the expectations at work are greater than they were right at first. So this part is challenging, but temporary. Linden will go back to daycare and Maren will go back to school, possibly as early as Wednesday (depending on whether Maren continues to test negative).

In any case, here are some cute pictures from the last few days:

My baby is three

Linden turned three! It is wonderful and sad. I love that she is getting bigger, and also get to be sad that she is getting bigger. But her birthday was all fun:

Happy birthday kiddo 🎂❤️🥳

Big girl

Over the past week Linden has decided to become a big girl. She started sleeping in her big girl bed instead of her crib. She is insisting on eating off of big plates instead of toddler plates. And then something happened that I was entirely unprepared for.

About four days ago she was playing with letter magnets on the dishwasher and she started sounding out the nonsense words she was making. I was impressed and curious, so I wrote the word “cat” and asked her to read it. She sounded it out and read it. We pulled out some cards that we had made for Maren when she was learning to read, and with a little bit of help Linden is legitimately reading:

Linden’s third birthday is on Tuesday. I am not really ready for her to be so grown up 😢

Snow hill

Almost all of my conversations with colleagues and strangers start with a discussion about the weather. We always start our day by checking the weather. It helps us organize our lives. Our lives more or less revolve around the weather here, which is why I find that I am so often talking about weather on this blog.

This past week we had one nice day (temperatures right around freezing), and the kiddos wanted to spend some time climbing a snow hill a couple of blocks away.

It struck me that this hill is much bigger than it was about a month ago:

And I was also struck by how much smaller the kids’ snowsuits look than they did two months ago:

This is how the passage of time is measured in a Saskatchewan winter 😂
